In the Water Margin
Song Wan is one of the first chiefs of Liangshan and is called Cloud-High Guardian. When Lin Chong arrives at the lake fortress, its leader is the Scholar in White Wang Lun, with Du Qian second and Song Wan third, while Zhu Gui keeps a tavern on the shore to watch the roads. Wang Lun fears any man abler than himself and keeps Lin Chong at a distance.
When Chao Gai's band comes after the birthday-gift robbery and Wang Lun tries to send them off with silver, Lin Chong kills him at the banquet. Song Wan and Du Qian kneel and accept the new leadership, and Song Wan stays on under Chao Gai and later Song Jiang, taking seat eighty-two beneath the Dimo star. In the campaign against Fang La he dies in the confused fighting for Runzhou, struck by arrows and trampled by horses.
