In the Water Margin
Duan Jingzhu comes from Zhuozhou. With his red hair and yellow beard he is called Golden Dog, and he makes his living stealing horses in the north. Beyond the frontier he steals a snow-white steed, the Jade Lion That Lights the Night, the mount of a prince of the Great Jin, meaning to present it to Song Jiang as his introduction to Liangshan. On the way the Five Tigers of the Zeng family seize it at the Zeng fortress.
Duan reports that the Zengs heaped insults on Song Jiang, and word comes back that they mean to capture every chief of Liangshan. Chao Gai insists on leading the attack himself, and in a night raid he is hit in the face by a poisoned arrow bearing the name of the Zengs' instructor Shi Wengong, and dies of it. Later Duan goes north again with Yang Lin and Shi Yong and buys more than two hundred horses for the band, only for Yu Baosi to rob them on the road and hand them to the Zengs. On Liangshan he is one of the four chiefs who carry secret military reports, and he takes the very last seat, one hundred and eight, beneath the Digou star.
