Lei Heng is the foot constable of Yuncheng, known as Winged Tiger for his leaping ability. His colleague Zhu Tong commands the mounted men, and both know Song Jiang. On a night patrol Lei Heng arrests Liu Tang, setting off an encounter in which official suspicion and personal loyalties are difficult to separate.
A dispute with the performer Bai Xiuying leads to public punishment. When she humiliates his mother, Lei Heng kills her in fury. Zhu Tong frees him during the escort to prison and accepts the consequences himself. Lei Heng joins Liangshan as its twenty-fifth chief beneath the Tiantui star, carrying a debt that goes far beyond ordinary friendship.
