In the Water Margin
Shi En is the son of the warden of the Mengzhou prison camp and is known as Golden-Eyed Tiger Cub. He ran the taverns and gambling houses of Happy Grove until the giant Jiang Menshen, backed by a garrison officer, beat him and took the place. When Wu Song arrives as a convict, Shi En spares him the usual beatings and sends him good food every day, then asks for his help.
Wu Song drinks his way down the road to Happy Grove and thrashes Jiang Menshen, and Shi En takes the place back. Jiang Menshen's patrons then frame Wu Song, and Shi En visits him three times in the death cell, paying to keep him alive. Shi En later joins the band on Two Dragon Mountain, comes with it to Liangshan, and takes seat eighty-five beneath the Difu star.
