In the Water Margin
Liu Tang has a reddish birthmark and red hair by his temple, which give him the nickname Red-Haired Demon. He seeks Chao Gai with news of the birthday-gift convoy, but Lei Heng arrests him after finding him asleep in a temple. Chao Gai secures his release by claiming kinship; Wu Yong then has to stop another quarrel over the money paid to the constable.
Liu Tang joins the robbery at Yellow Mud Ridge and follows Chao Gai to Liangshan. Later he carries gold and a letter to thank Song Jiang for helping them escape. That letter becomes dangerous evidence in Song Jiang’s own troubles. Liu Tang takes seat twenty-one beneath the Tianyi star.
