In the Water Margin
Mu Hong is a wealthy and overbearing figure in Jieyang, where he and his younger brother Mu Chun command local influence. Song Jiang offends them by giving money to the travelling performer Xue Yong. A pursuit through the night drives Song Jiang toward the river and onto Zhang Heng’s dangerous boat.
Li Jun arrives and reveals the fugitive’s identity. Hostility turns to apologies when the brothers learn that he is the famous Song Jiang. Mu Hong later helps rescue him at Jiangzhou and joins Liangshan, taking seat twenty-four beneath the Tianjiu star as one of the eight cavalry vanguards.
