In the Water Margin
Suo Chao serves in the army at Daming, wielding a great axe. His eagerness to charge ahead earns him the name Impatient Vanguard. When Yang Zhi arrives, a military demonstration brings the two men into a fierce contest. Neither can easily overcome the other, and rivalry becomes mutual respect.
He later defends Daming against Liangshan, is captured and joins the mountain band. At the great assembly he takes seat nineteen beneath the Tiankong star and joins the eight cavalry vanguards. The opponent he once faced on the parade ground, Yang Zhi, now rides on the same side.
